The Timekeepers' society revolves around the Timepool. What, and where, is the Timepool? Deep in the tunnels, directly underneath the Moonpool, is an identical, equally beautiful pool. Light streams into it from the Moonpool above it, woven and bended by the Moonpool into shimmering patterns on the surface of the water. While the Moonpool shows you- or used to show you- visions of other spaces and dimensions such as the world of StarClan, in the present; the Timepool shows you visions of other times and eras.
Only the highest-ranked Timekeepers are allowed to venture into the future, for the skills needed to return to the present are dangerous to know and terrifying to use. However, venturing into the past is common, and many do so- wishing to increase their understanding of the world. The Timekeepers seek a way to freely travel throughout time, not just receive visions of it. They guard their secrets jealously, and very rarely allow Clan cats to come near the Timepool.
The Teller: Position is Open
The Teller is the leader of the Timekeepers. With a good knowledge of both the past and the future, they are experts on time and how to navigate the visions that the Timepool presents. They make all the big decisions and are to be obeyed without question. When one dies or steps down, usually at the end of a year- for the position holds a lot of danger, responsibility, and stress, and it is seen as arrogant not to step down after a year or so- the next one will be elected from among the Nobles by the Historians, each of whom get a single vote.
The Nobles: None Yet
There will be up to five Nobles at any time. They are extremely skilled at navigating the visions and are allowed to access the future. They are appointed by the Teller and must pass a test to gain access to the rank; the test is similar to a medicine cat ceremony in that it is an honoured tradition and that it must be kept absolutely secret. Nobles are like a cross between senior warriors and medicine cats; they must be obeyed by the lower ranks and are skilful with herbs and remedies. When the Teller steps down, one of them can be appointed Teller.
The Historians: None Yet
The Historians are the regular cats of the Timekeepers. They are allowed to explore visions of the past, but never the future- this is seen as far too dangerous. They also do basic hunting- a cat has to eat, mystical forays into time or not! They never go above ground, though- they know that above ground, the Dark Forest cats rule, forcing everybody to call them Higher Cats. In the tunnels, though, the Dark Forest cats have no power.
Little Ones: None yet
Any kit or young cat who is not yet ready to be a Historian is a Little One; as the Timekeepers lives' involve very little fighting, as these cats get older, the playing-to-learning ratio just changes more and more (gradually), rather than having two separate 'kit' and 'apprentice' ranks. They do not have mentors, but take lessons from whoever is around, often from their parents.
The Keepers' Keepers: None yet
They are called the Keepers' Keepers traditionally, but are more usually referred to as the 'off-duties' or 'offs'. They are cats who, for any reason, are off duty. Taking this rank can be temporary, in the case of a mother who has just given birth and is looking after her young kits, or it can be permanent, in the case of an old cat retiring for good. The cats of this rank are the respected advisors of the pack; as they stay in the present, rather than spending their time in other times, they are expected to know more about the present than others- although many still retain good knowledges of history and future-telling from their 'on-duty' days, and all tell good stories!
Names in the Timekeepers descended from loner and rogue names, and as such, do not have the two parts of Clan names; each Timekeeper is named after something. However, the tunnels cut the Timekeepers off from the rest of the world, and so they have developed some strange triparte names.
Each has a first name, which in loner tradition, can be anything from a random jumble of letters to the name of something; from Kyarthos to George to Bracken to Xaqtifrya to Emily to Brightness. However, their names each also have two other parts; one from the father, and one from the mother. She-cats have their own name, then their mother's, then their father's; toms have their own name, then their father's, then their mothers.
So if Amaya Rhidea Kathrosan (female) and Tagon Erallor Miyena (male) had two kits, one female, one male, and named the female Sally and the male Jack, then the names would be Sally Amaya Tagon and Jack Tagon Amaya.
Timekeepers also have epithets; nobody will simply be called 'Janet' or 'Susan' or 'Callum', it's always 'Janet the Brave', 'Susan the Wise', or 'Callum the Quick-Witted'. Epithets are awarded to a cat by the Teller upon becoming a Historian in the secret Timekeeper ceremony, and usually reflect their personality. A new epithet can be awarded to a cat who does something good- so if Callum the Quick-Witted had a wonderful future vision that came true and warned everybody of a tunnel collapse so that by his vision Callum saved lives, Callum could be awarded the epithet 'the Lifesaver'. So he would then be 'Callum the Quick-Witted Lifesaver'. Equally, epithets can be taken away from cats if they are exiled. No two cats ever have the same epithet.
