A lot of sites award/vote for a monthly Thread of the Month, Female Character of the Month, Male Character of the Month, Member of the Month, Staff Member of the Month, Couple of the Month, Quote of the Month, etc.
Whoever is chosen for each of these awards gets their avatar/a picture in the sidebar, and they get gloating rights, and um, not a lot else. Maybe a little thing in their profile that says 'OTM Oct 2011' or 'OTM Nov 2011' depending on the month they won it in.
So, do you think we should have Of The Month awards? And if so which awards?
Pros
- it encourages members to think about the good work others do for the site
- it encourages members to do good stuff and be active in the hope they'll be picked
- it makes the members who get picked feel all warm and glowy and proud
- it looks colourful and fun in the sidebar
Cons
- it's a lot of work for the staff
- it can make people who don't get picked feel excluded, as with all competitions; especially if they worked hard for it.
-it takes up more space in an already crowded sidebar

Also, for the different awards (we can have as many as we want but I'd limit it to three or four)
Thread of the Month
Pros; recognises good threads and the RPers in them, awards multiple members (all those who participated in thread) so less excluding
Cons; not many threads right now (but there will be as activity picks up!)
Female & Male Character of the Month
Pros; dividing it between female/male means we can award twice as many members!
Cons; it's simpler and easier to just award a 'Character of the Month'.
Character of the Month
Pros; recognises good RPers and good characters, makes people strive to create good characters, good characters are the basis of a good forum
Cons; need to prevent a member winning Member OTM and Character OTM on same month somehow
Member of the Month
Pros; drives people to do well in everything they possibly can at once, rather than the others which only says be good at one specific thing
Cons; exclusive, a member can be good with one character but bad with another
Staff of the Month
Pros; recognises staff's hard work
Cons; singles out staff, which FE aims not to do
Couple of the Month
Pros; recognises two characters at once, recognises good romance threads
Cons; Pushes people to do more romance threads when actually a forum needs more mystery/action/political threads to push plot forwards
Quote of the Month
Pros; A quote can be funny and make people laugh
Cons; It only recognises one small thing, it makes people want to type funny quotes and so might fill FE's posts with cliches and characters strutting around saying really over-the-top things.
Please don't vote multiple times with multiple accounts. It skews the total. And it will make me mad.
