Wrenstar sniffed the air. It was still far off. Did she have enough time? Probably. "Quickly, unbury the prey," she told Pantherpaw. "If we don't take that back, it'll be a waste of a hunting trip. If a..." she hesitated before saying what exactly it was that she smelt. "If something else turns up, it'll find it and eat it."
Hurriedly unburying the prey, Wrenstar tossed a piece to Pantherpaw to carry, and picked the rest of it up herself. She didn't bother saying 'go' - she couldn't through the fresh-kill - so she just nodded and then started walking away, fast. All her instincts screamed to run like crazy, but she was with an apprentice, and she wasn't going to leave her behind.

Pantherpaw caught the rabbit. Seeing Wrenstar nod, she followed after her, trying to keep up with her fast pace. What was wrong? What was the smell? Wrenstar defnitely looked worried-were they in danger? Real danger?
But Wrenstar wasn´t running...so maybe it was okay. Maybe they could escape the strange animal-whatever it was. Maybe it was a Twoleg. What would a Twoleg do to them? Would it capture them? Kill them? Or maybe it would leave them alone...no, that was probably too much to hope for.
Pantherpaw looked around and noticed Wrenstar was ahead of her. Once again, she had been thinking too much. She quickened her pace into a run, going as fast as she could.

Wrenstar settled into a slow jog. She breathed a little easier once Pantherpaw had caught up and drawn alongside her. She put her head down, breathing in the smell of prey. Wrenstar hadn't realised quite how hungry she was, but she resisted the temptation to bite down, carrying the prey gently in her mouth.
That was probably the reason she didn't smell the badger until it was almost too late.
She froze, flicking her tail across Pantherpaw to stop her, and dropped the prey. The white stripe down the badger's forehead was struck through with a puckered scar. Hissing, Wrenstar unsheathed her claws and struck out, thinking only to protect her younger Clanmate.
She bunched her hind paws under her and reared up, striking at the badger's old wound and its eyes. She couldn't remember being more scared in her life; sure, she'd been in much more dangerous situations before, but this was the first time anybody's life except hers had been in danger, and every part of her brain was screaming at all the other parts for not anticipating this.
Her thoughts were cut off as the badger lumbered forwards. Staggering backwards, Wrenstar jumped back, then struck again, but her claws were ineffectual against the badger's hide.

Pantherpaw skidded to a halt and gasped as she saw the badger looming in front of them. She had never seen a badger before, but she had heard terrible stories about them. What should she do? Run and hide? But where? And what about Wrenstar? Surely they would get out of this somehow...
And suddenly she saw the badger attacking her leader. "Wrenstar is in danger!" was all that Pantherpaw could think. She leaped onto the badger, landing on his back. Pantherpaw unsheathed her claws and pressed them into his back as hard as she could, hoping to divert him.

Wrenstar yowled a war cry and slashed at the badger. Suddenly Pantherpaw was attacking the badger. What did she think she was doing? She was going to get hurt!
As the badger's eyes rolled around and it twisted its head to bite Pantherpaw on his back, Wrenstar threw herself at him, determined to not let her Clanmate get hurt. She dug her claws into his eye and, twisting around to the left, sunk her teeth into his leg. With a grunt of frustration, the badger shook the two cats off and lumbered away.
Wrenstar clambered to her feet, breathing hard. "Well, that was an interesting encounter. Are you alright?"
Wrenstar herself was scratched and bruised, but okay. She licked her fur, smoothing it down to cover up the shock she'd gotten.

"What did I just do? I´ll get killed for sure!" Pantherpaw thought. Why had she attacked the badger? Fear made her fur prick up, but what could she do now?
The badger turned its head and opened its jaws, ready to bite her. And suddenly out of nowhere Wrenstar was there, scratching at the badger´s eye and biting his leg. The badger shook them off. Pantherpaw felt relieved as she watched him go away. Did that mean they were safe now?
"Well, that was an interesting encounter. Are you alright?" she heard Wrenstar ask. Pantherpaw lowered her head. Was she in trouble now?
Her paws hurt a bit from being thrown onto the ground so suddenly, but other than that, she was fine. "Yes, I´m okay" she said.

Wrenstar watched the apprentice lower her head, a little confused. Most young cats would've been running around celebrating their triumphant victory by now. "Yes, I'm okay." Wrenstar smiled. "Well done. That was well fought," she congratulated Pantherpaw. "You showed a lot of courage striking like that." DawnClan needed more apprentices with the easy recklessness to jump on badgers and hit them. It was the kind of thing Wrenstar would've done when she was younger, and thus she approved, although she perhaps felt a little guilty for doing so. Wrenstar picked up the prey that she needed to carry. Flicking her tail for Pantherpaw to follow, Wrenstar headed off to camp. (Sorry this post was a little short. No muse recently. Anyway, wanna end thread and maybe start one involving a few more characters or something?  ) |

Her leader smiled. "Well done. That was well fought."
Pantherpaw beamed with pride. So she had done the right thing after all? Suddenly, Pantherpaw felt completely exhausted. It seemed like such a long time ago that she and Wrenstar had been practising fighting moves. Now she had actually attacked a real badger! This would definitely be something exciting to tell the other apprentices.
At Wrenstar´s signal, Pantherpaw followed her as they headed back. Pantherpaw could smell all the smells of the forest and for the first time she really started to appreciate how wonderful it was not to be a kit anymore. She knew she wanted to train more and someday become a real Warrior.
(Yeah, sure. Lostia´s almost finished, so we could do something with her and Gladia too.)
