The Higher Cats knew nothing of her intentions; everybody in camp had been told she was checking the area for any return of badgers, but everybody knew why she really came. Wrenstar came here, as so many cats before her, to talk where the Higher Cats could not hear, to think where the Higher Cats could not know, to be free. And to teach. Wrenstar was expecting an apprentice to meet her here, above the entrance to Midnight's den. But not for a little while yet. The young leader glanced at the sun. She had half an hour. She stretched, and then went very still, eyes searching the landscape for prey. The moment stretched out, but at the same time it was a nothing, a not-moment, where time stood still. That was how it felt to Wrenstar, wrapped in the uttermost focus. Spotting a rabbit, she leapt into action. Limbs pounded the rough earth and soon a rabbit was held in her teeth as she shook it from side to side, making sure it was dead. Confident that it was, she bounded back to Midnight's den and buried it, to take to camp later. Quietly she yawned, then considered the situation. Higher Cats ruled her Clan and all the others. It was a detestable way of life, for her Clan to live in fear, but it was the way things were. But not for much longer. Wrenstar had plans, which she was about to go forward with. Oh yes, Wrenstar had plans. And nothing would stop her. This, though, was where it started; the teaching of apprentices. She glanced at the horizon, and waited patiently.

Pantherpaw quietly walked towards Midnight´s Den. It was her first lesson of training! Finally, she could do what all those cats before her had been able she do. Finally, she could learn to fight. Hearing a noise, Pantherpaw quickly crawled behind a tree. Could it be one of The Higher Cats? Had they tracked her? But they couldn´t have! After all, she had told the others she was helping Wrenstar scan the place for badgers. Cautiously, she peeked out of her hiding place. As she did so, Pantherpaw sighed with relief. It was just a mouse. But she wouldn´t stop to try to kill it, she was late enough already. Pantherpaw went on. Soon, she saw Wrenstar and meowed a welcome.

"Hey," she replied easily, smiling at the young apprentice. She was a little embarrassed at having jumped like that, but this place was... This place was spooky, in a strange way; it wasn't dark or dangerous like other places, it didn't have odd rumours about it, it didn't have odd shadows or creepy caves. What it had was history. Wrenstar could almost see the ghosts of cats dead and gone swarming around her. The cats from the Prophecy, who came here to consult Midnight; the four Original Clans who had stopped here once; the many who had journeyed to here, from here, through here. Midnight herself, even. It was unbelievable to Wrenstar, how much had been lost, and that gave her a quiet moment of determination that she would restore that. So much of it was resting on the shoulders of her Clan. She shook herself. Such dark thoughts today! "Pantherpaw, this is Midnight's den," she told the apprentice. "This is one of the last places the Higher Cats don't rule. I don't know why they do not come here, but DawnClan is safe here, and has always been safe here. This is the last place left where DawnClan are safe to talk, and to train." Wrenstar pulled back slightly, and then trotted over to the opening in the ground. "See down there? Down there was where Midnight lived, where Brambleclaw and the others fell into and received her message. If you breathe deeply, the air almost tastes of history. This is not just another piece of land." The opening was dark and smelt of sea-salt, with a hint of badger, still there even after all these years. Maybe another had moved in after Midnight, though Wrenstar doubted it. Though the young leader strained her eyes, she couldn't see much in the darkness. She sighed slightly, then straightened. She smiled at Pantherpaw. "Today we'll train here. I'll teach you some fighting moves, if you like. And you can understand why our Clan lives the way it does."

Pantherpaw sniffed. The air was so...different from what she was used to. She couldn´t quite describe the smell. She also felt different: excited, and yet filled with an inner calm. Pantherpaw smiled. Learn some fighting moves? Oh, yes! She remembered times when she had been a kit of two moons and an apperentice had told her about training at Midnight´s Den. The apprentice had told her that a badger called Midnight had once lived there and that the cats went there to learn to fight so that, one day, they could defeat the Higher Cats. Ever since then, Pantherpaw had wanted to join in. She had wanted to fight like the others. Fight against the evil Higher Cats. "That would be amazing" she replied.

"You can't smell the Clan as strongly out here, can you? And not the Higher Cats either. It's the smell of freedom, but also of being alone." And they were, out here, very much alone. There was not another cat in sight. Apart from the slightest, stalest hint of badger at the old den's entrance, there was no sign that other cats came here. It was, in a way, beautiful. But at the same time, it made Wrenstar feel small, only one cat in many generations, only one leader of one Clan in a huge world. "That would be amazing," Pantherpaw replied. Wrenstar smiled, glad she felt that way. It was always good to have eager young apprentices; it made Wrenstar feel like the Clan had a future. Oh, forgotten stars, her thoughts were going all dark and deep today. She frowned at herself, told her mind to stop leading her down such thoughtful alleys and concentrate, and got back to work. "We may as well jump straight in then, right?" Wrenstar smiled. Leading Pantherpaw a little way back away from the entrance - she didn't want either of them to fall in during the short training session - she decided to start with a defensive move. Turning her head, the little tabby turned a tight roll over her shoulder and bounced back onto her paws. "That's a good warm-up move," she commented. "It stretches you a little, and it's a nice solid defensive move." Taking a few steps back, Wrenstar grinned at Pantherpaw. "You try. Then maybe we could try a little spar, see what you've already figured out."

Pantherpaw watched Wrenstar as she turned her head and did a roll over her shoulder. It looked quite complicated. "You try. Then maybe we could try a little spar, see what you´ve already figured out." Nervously, Pantherpaw stepped forward. She turned her head just as she´d seen Wrenstar do. Then she started to roll. Just as she thought it was going well, Pantherpaw lost control and fell. Quickly, she jumped up again. "It´s fine, I can do it" she meowed. At least, she hoped she could. Again, Pantherpaw turned her head and rolled, hoping that it would work this time. She felt her body rolling and this time managed to land on her paws. Phew.

"That's good! Really good. Second time lucky, hey?" She was impressed by Pantherpaw's quick pick-up of the technique, but then again, Wrenstar was always impressed by apprentices. She always found herself... sort of... well, underestimating them. She'd been good at stuff at that age; she remembered sort of looking down on the others, the ones who didn't have her skill, thinking they were all useless. She didn't like that. It didn't show her to herself in a good light, and Wrenstar's immense confidence all depended on showing her to herself in a good light. Spinning around, the little tabby faced the young apprentice. Her fighting stance was casual, perhaps not perfect, but suited to Wrenstar herself; as each fighting style was different, so Wrenstar tailored every move to herself. Her stance was low, her weight on her back paws, her head lowered subtly to protect her neck. Fighting, to Wrenstar, was something beautiful; a dance, almost. Killing and hurt were to be avoided, but the fight itself, the dance, the competition, the thrill... this was what Wrenstar thrived on. She had to remind herself carefully that this was a spar, a first spar for Pantherpaw, a training spar. She would have to go very easy. Subtly she altered her stance, making it lighter on one side, weaker. These were the things that an experienced fighter noticed, and Wrenstar could call herself one of those, after a lifetime of battles and running around the place hating on Higher Cats. Definitely tons of fun. "Shall we spar?" she asked. "It's early for a proper spar, but we have to work fast. You have to get used to this - this is the way we have to train, because of the Higher Cats. You hate them, right? Pretend I'm one, and we'll get some training done. Claws sheathed, though." Wrenstar enjoyed sparring, and it was a good way to get fighting training going quickly, to create a well-rounded warrior right from the start, not focused on any particular techniques or drills. She hated having to train fast, hated the Higher Cats, but then, Wrenstar hated lots of things. She would just have to deal with it.

It hadn´t been hard, but then again it hadn´t been real fighting. Pantherpaw couldn´t imagine attacking her leader. How could she? But she could definitely imagine attacking a Higher Cat. Pantherpaw narrowed her eyes and imagined a Higher Cat standing in front of her. A cat who was responsible for all the deaths and injuries of her tribe. The apprentice hissed as she extended her paws. She suddenly remembered that they were meant to be sheathed and quickly pulled them back. Then she let out a second hiss and leaped.

Oh well - it wouldn't be great for her to get into the part too much anyway. She noted the apprentice's unsheathed claws with wide eyes and went to tap her smartly on the wrist, as she would do to any apprentice (or warrior, come to that) who unsheathed claws, but smiled when Pantherpaw sheathed them. Then she was hit by the leap. There was the slightest sense of oomph in her chest as she was hit, the fighting stance saving her from going down straight away. The quiet alarm that fluttered in the back of her mind was subdued - training session, training session. She had to fiercely remind herself that she wasn't in danger, wasn't going to be hurt. Wrenstar's instinct screamed at her to bite out. No - this was a training session. That would make her as bad as Tigerstar. Pantherpaw's weight wasn't really enough to take her down, but Wrenstar wasn't a big cat, so it was easy enough to roll with it. She fell, batting at Pantherpaw's ears, but pulling her blows so she hit gently. She pushed the other cat off her with her hind paws and rolled over so Pantherpaw was on her back, the more experienced Wrenstar standing above her. "Whaddya do now?" she asked, smiling. She didn't wait for the apprentice to work it out, trying to coach her through the battle. "If I was a Higher Cat, I'd be going for your throat or your belly with my claws. Defend with your forepaws. Use your hind legs to push me off you and roll me over."

Attack her neck? Pantherpaw quickly pulled her head to her chest, protecting her neck. "Defend with your forepaws. Use your hind legs to push me off you and roll me over." Pantherpaw bent her legs, ready to kick. Kick, but where? Wrenstar had said that Higher Cats aimed for the belly, but wouldn´t she hurt Wrenstar? Though Wrenstar was a lot stronger than she was... Making a split-second decision, Pantherpaw kicked Wrenstar´s tummy, trying not to push too hard, just hard enough to push her off. Pantherpaw watched Wrenstar fall to the ground. What should she do now? Her natural instinct told her to run, but she couldn´t do that. Again, Pantherpaw tried to picture Wrenstar as a Higher Cat. A higher cat who had killed other innocent cats and ruined their lives. Rage filled Pantherpaw and she bounded over to where Wrenstar was lying. Just as she was about to attack, Pantherpaw remembered herself. Instead of a Higher Cat, she saw Wrenstar lying in front of her. Pantherpaw wasn´t sure what to do, so she merely laid her paws on Wrenstar´s belly.
OOC: Was Pantherpaw lying on her back on the ground with Wrenstar standing over her at the beginning? I wasn´t sure...

"Good." She rolled up, pushing the paws off. She had seen this so many times before, and she was pleased the apprentice had turned out well. "You know why this is all happening? You know why we need to train warriors to fight in secret? You know why DawnClan lives in fear of the Higher Cats?" Wrenstar's green eyes stared deep into the apprentice's. "Because some cats don't have that restraint." Flicking her tail, the young leader sat back, thoughtful. It was entirely possible she took herself too seriously, but Wrenstar took everything seriously; life, death, war, peace, food, hunger. This needed to be said, to every apprentice that came here. "There were another four Clans once. Have the elders told you stories about them? They shouldn't, really, the Higher Cats might hear if we're in camp, but I know they do, and that's alright, because history should be passed on." The little tabby took a deep breath, indicating that the apprentice could relax as she did so. Wrenstar herself remained sat bolt upright, tail wrapped around her forepaws. "There were Clans once called ThunderClan and WindClan and ShadowClan and RiverClan. We, all the Clans today, are their ancestors. There used to be cats in the sky, called StarClan, little points of light that watched from the darkness above. But the Higher Cats defeated them in a big battle, and now there is only darkness." Wrenstar stared for a moment now, willing the apprentice to understand. There was something important about history, about knowing the stories of the cats who came before. Wrenstar had a strange wistfulness for the days of warrior ancestors - surely she couldn't miss what she had never had? But she did, and she raged at it. She was a strange being of two extremes, hate and love. Maybe they were the same thing. Without warning, she launched back into the spar. Reaching out a paw, claws safely sheathed, she launched a blow at the apprentice's flank, pulling it at the last second so it landed gently. "Strikes are hard to block, so don't try. You'll get scratched. Dodge instead." Demonstrating the ideal paw movement - a little hop-skip, pulling front paws in and then reaching back with the back paws to establish balance - Wrenstar smiled at the apprentice and threw another blow out, gentle enough not to hurt, but firm and fast.

Pantherpaw listened to Wrenstar as she told her about the older tribes. Yes, the elders had told her bits and pieces. Stories about brave Firestar and so many others. Sometimes, Pantherpaw hadn´t been sure whether these stories were true or not. Nevertheless, she had loved listening to them. So it was true then. All of it. ThunderClan, ShadowClan and everything else. Pantherpaw tried to imagine StarClan. Little points of light? Whitefrost, one of the elders had white fur, that was quite light. Pantherpaw tried to imagine millions of Whitefrosts in the sky, but it didn´t seem to work. For one thing, Whitefrost was a very grumpy cat and Pantherpaw didn´t like the thought of Whitefrost watching over her all the time. For another, the sky was dark at night with no light. That was the way it always was, the way it worked. But wouldn´t it be amazing if it were true? Light that appeared when the sun went down? And the Higher Cats had killed it? No. The Higher Cats had done a lot of bad, but kill light? That was...too bad. Though, in a way, Pantherpaw wouldn´t put it past them. After all, they were the evil cats who had killed her father. "Strikes are hard to block, so don't try. You'll get scratched. Dodge instead." Wrenstar said. Pantherpaw watched her as she demonstrated. It looked complicated, as had everything else. Though maybe, if she tried very hard, she could manage. After all, she wanted to learn to fight so that, one day, she could defeat those evil Higher Cats. Suddenly, Wrenstar threw another blow, but this time Pantherpaw was prepared. She copied the hop-skip that Wrenstar had done and smiled. She had managed.

"That's good. You'll do well at this," she complimented her. In truth it was far too early in her training to know whether she'd be any good or not, but it was always good to keep apprentices' confidence up. "That's enough fighting. I'll just give you a taster for today - we can always come back and go in-depth. You won't have to fight in battles for ages yet," she commented. "How about we go hunting?" Wrenstar smiled, and then straightened and scanned the horizon, her nose lifted to the air and scenting eagerly, searching out prey. She smelt rabbit and smiled at Pantherpaw. "Okay, we'll look for rabbit. If you see one, try and creep up on it. The minute you think there's a chance it's noticed you - run. Chase after it, try and deflect it from going near anything that looks like a rabbit hole, and keep on its tail until it's worn out. You got that?" Without really waiting long for an answer, Wrenstar spun and bounded in search of the rabbit scent. She went slowly, to enable the apprentice to keep up. There. She was on the rabbit's trail, paws silent across the open ground. It didn't take long. It raised its nose, sniffing the air in a mirror of Wrenstar's own action moments before. Wrenstar knew it would scent danger, and she exploded into action, going from standstill to flat-out sprint in an instant. Stealth was not exactly her forte, but this she could do. She ran behind it until it tired, and then she was leaping into its path, guiding it back to Pantherpaw with bounds and hisses behind the prey. "All yours," she called to the apprentice.

All hers? Pantherpaw could hardly believe it. A whole rabbit...for her? And she wouldn´t have to bring it back to the clan and share it with them? Maybe this was a special treat for her first day of training. Maybe all the apprentices got a rabbit the first day. Pantherpaw sniffed. It did smell very good and she was hungry after the training. Though didn´t the warrior code said that the clan had to be fed before she fed herself? Wouldn´t she be breaking the code if she ate it? But then again, Wrenstar had given it to her. Wrenstar should know about the warrior code. If she had given her the rabbit, it should be okay. Pantherpaw sniffed again. The rabbit smelled so good, so fresh, so tasty. Unless…unless it was some kind of test. Was it? Could it be? Why not? Because, because…Pantherpaw couldn´t think of any reasons. And maybe Wrenstar wanted to check if she really knew and honoured the warrior code. That made sense. And after all, it wouldn´t hurt to check if she could really eat the rabbit. Pantherpaw looked at Wrenstar. “But what about the clan?” she asked, trying to sound as if it was an innocent question in case she´d gotten it wrong.

"Stop staring at it and sniffing and catch it!" she yowled. Leaping forwards, she snagged a claw in its tail, but hissed as she realised she'd fallen too far behind to get hold of it. "But what about the Clan?" asked Pantherpaw. Wrenstar sighed. It had gotten away. "Okay, Pantherpaw, when I say 'All yours', I generally mean to catch. We work together to catch things - everybody on a patrol does, mentor and apprentice, leader and warrior, senior and junior. One cat might scare a rabbit out of its burrow, another might chase it into the last cat. Or several cats might work together to block escape routes and take a large piece of prey together." She smiled. "Don't worry. This is a learning exercise." Trotting over to a patch of clearer earth, along the edge of the cliff-top where there was less grass, Wrenstar scratched several marks in the earth, explaining them out loud as she went. "Say this is the rabbit - and this is me - and we chase it along this dotted line - and this is you - you see how I'm going to find it difficult to overtake it and catch it? So I chase it towards you... and you move along this dotted line here - yes?" Wrenstar smiled brightly. "If you've got all that, let's go find another."

So the rabbit wasn´t meant for her after all. She wondered why she hadn´t realized she was meant to catch it. After some thinking, Pantherpaw decided she must have been feeling very hungry. The thought of food had probably clouded her brain. And now the rabbit had run away. But next time...next time she would catch it. She would manage. Pantherpaw followed Wrenstar and watched her explaining the hunting strategy. It all looked so complicated, so many lines...quickly, Pantherpaw snapped her brain into focus. She had to concentrate or she wouldn´t manage to catch the next rabbit. So Wrenstar would chase the rabbit along that line and then Pantherpaw would move over the other line and catch it. Yes, that seemed simple enough. She just hoped she would catch it. Admittingly, it did feel amazing to know she would soon have the chance to catch food just like the other cats. Pantherpaw had always wanted to try hunting. She went though the plan again in her head. Wrenstar would chase the rabbit over the first line, then Pantherpaw would come over from the other line, advance upon him and then...well, she could try pouncing on him and digging her claws into his body. Yes, that was what she would do. "If you've got all that, let's go find another." Wrenstar said. Pantherpaw looked at her and nodded. She could do it.
(OOC: xD And I was actually going to make Pantherpaw eat it at first. Now THAT would have been funny...)

Everybody starts somewhere," she told the apprentice encouragingly. Straightening, Wrenstar's green gaze seemed to swallow up the land as she stared unwaveringly at the picture the land made. It was a beautiful place, with an emptiness to the land and sky that was both glorious freedom and danger, a place without shelter. But the DawnClan cat was used to it, and she took no notice of the cold breeze that ruffled her fur. Wrenstar suddenly smiled, and went off, her tail curling into a beckoning gesture. She ran quickly and silently, belly low to the ground, and moved into place behind a gorse bush. She was still a long way off - you had to be, on the open moors, or your prey would see you. It was still there, not having caught the scent of feline danger upon the sweet, cool breeze. Wrenstar, on the other hand, had its scent and was tracking, watching, ready. She whispered, "Stay here, be ready," without turning her head to check that the apprentice was following. She assumed she was, and besides, as little movement as possible was necessary or the prey would see them coming. Slinking off towards the rabbit, she found a spot, closer to the rabbit and further up the hill, so that the prey was trapped between her and the apprentice, though it didn't know it yet. The rabbit's ear twitched and Wrenstar was off, paws slamming into the ground and then shooting down the hill. Suddenly fierce, she hissed and lunged for the rabbit, but it was moving too, away from her. She could have run faster and pounced, but she kept behind it, smelling its fear-scent. The purpose of this exercise was to teach Pantherpaw to hunt, not decimate the local rabbit population. Falling behind, she called out, "Claws out!" and grinned, waiting for the rabbit to realise it was running straight into another DawnClanner.

Pantherpaw followed Wrenstar, doing her best to walk as quietly as she could. She copied the way Wrenstar crouched low and tried to tread as softly as possible. As Pantherpaw ran faster, she could feel the beautiful cold wind. She loved this feeling of freedom and ecstasy and the joy of soon being able to make her first catch. They stopped behind a gorse bush. “Stay here, be ready” Wrenstar whispered. Pantherpaw stayed where she was and watched her leader slinking off towards the rabbit. Suddenly, Wrenstar pounced and chased after the rabbit, who was now running in Pantherpaw´s direction. "Claws out!" she heard Wrenstar shout. Pantherpaw knew what she had to do. Without a moment´s hesitation, she came out from behind the bush and slowly treaded closer to the rabbit. It hadn´t noticed her yet, it was still frantically running for its life. It was so ironic that it would be killed just when it thought it was running to safety. Pantherpaw leaped and landed on the creature. Instinctively, she took it out with a swipe of her claws. Suddenly, she felt a strange feeling running through her and it took her a while to realize what it was: pride. She had managed to make her first catch and it felt amazing.

(Sorry I took so long - exams are coming up and life is crazy hectic) [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=width,550,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true] | [scrolly:h(244),w(550),sy][atrb=background,http://i.imm.io/7mMA.png] Wrenstar grinned as she saw Pantherpaw make the catch. She was quick and stealthy, and she felt sure she would be a fine warrior some day. Trotting up, she pushed through the bushes until she found the place where she had buried the first bit of prey. "Come over here and bury it with mine," she called. "We can come back for these and take them back to camp later." She raised her head and sniffed the air. She was beginning to think they should get back to fighting - time in this place was limited, and they could train hunting any old place. But suddenly she paused, then stopped dead, her nose detecting a faint scent of trouble. How many times have I told myself not to tempt fate? "Sniff the air," Wrenstar told Pantherpaw, looking confident even though she wasn't. She could handle most things by herself, but with a younger cat to protect... that was a different matter. She scented hard and realised what it was; badger. "We need to get out of here," she ordered.

Pantherpaw saw Wrenstar grin and began to smile herself. It felt amazing to have managed to catch the rabbit. That would be something to tell her fellow apprentices! All in all, the day seemed to be getting better and better. "Come over here and bury it with mine," Wrenstar said. Pantherpaw started to walk over, but suddenly Wrenstar paused. Pantherpaw quickly looked at her and noticed her worried expression. Was there a problem? What had happened? What should she do? "Sniff the air," Wrenstar told her, her expression changing back to normal. Pantherpaw sniffed. Sure enough, there was something strange in the air. Pantherpaw sniffed again, trying to concentrate on it. No, she just couldn´t trace it. It was a strong smell, and not a very nice one either. "We need to get out of here," Wrenstar said. Pantherpaw longed to know what the smell was. But if it was something dangerous, they had better get away as soon as possible. She quickly nodded. "Where do we go?" she asked. "Back to the camp?"
