This thread will guide a person through creating a good character, from selecting a good, thoughtful name and choosing the Clan, to building a good appearance and personality and balancing the strengths and weaknesses.
I'm going to do this by going through each section of the form and discussing how to fill it out.
We'll start with the Clan. This isn't the first section on the profile, but you'll need to know which Clan and rank your character has before you fill out the rest of it!
In general, I would select a Clan based on what kind of character you want to RP and what kind of plots you want to be involved in. ForeverClan are pretty normal cats with pretty normal lives; DawnClan are proud and follow the warrior code to the letter; DuskClan are peaceful and good healers; NeverClan are mostly pretty evil. Each Clan has both strengths and weaknesses.
If you're stuck between two Clans, remember you can always make more than one character, and put one in each Clan.
Clan selection isn't something I can really help you with; it's just your own personal preference. There's no 'right' or 'wrong' Clan to pick.
Now; the rank. Again; there's no right or wrong rank to pick. It just depends on the character you want to play. Often, playing a younger cat such as a kit will provide the benefit of being able to play your character as they grow up and develop their personality; but older cats will often be involved in more interesting plots than kits. A warrior can hunt, fight, murder their enemies, betray their Clan, fall in love, have kits, go on patrol, become deputy, and so on; a kit can't do those things. It's your choice!
Experimenting around with ranks other than kit, apprentice, warrior, deputy or leader - choosing a rank like medicine or elder or queen - can also mix things up a bit!
Now that you've chosen your Clan and rank, you can choose your character's name. It may help to visit this thread, which has some suggestions and rules on names.
Think about what your character's mother would have named their kit; not just about what 'suits' the cat. Even if the cat is totally evil, a name like 'Ragefire' isn't good, because no mother names her kit 'Ragekit' (unless, of course, they're a NeverClanner).
If you're stuck; bird prefixes like Eagle or Kestrel are good for DawnClan; fierce names like Tiger or Thorn are good for NeverClan; names that describe the kit, like Grey or Striped, are good for ForeverClan; and names of plants, like Oak or Mint, are good for DuskClan.
Now, the suffix! If they are a kit, apprentice, or leader, this is realllllly simple; -kit for a kit, -paw for an apprentice, -star/-shadow for a DaC leader, -servant for a DuC leader, -shadow for a NC leader, and -sky for a FC leader.
If they are a warrior,
