Name: Wrenstar
Nickname/Alias: N/A
Gender: Female
Age: 4
Group: DawnClan
Rank: Leader
Appearance: Wrenstar is a pretty dappled tortoiseshell tabby. Her fur is a light brown, dappled and striped, as tortoiseshell tabbies are, with darker browns and warmer coppery colours. Down her forehead, around her ears, and along her spine and tail, her fur is made up of warmer, richer shades. She is small and wiry, with a thin, sleek coat. Her long tail has dark brown stripes around it in rings. Her eyes are small and sharp, and emerald green. She has very fluffy paws, a fluffy tail and fluffy ears. She has a white chin, and her white chest is striped with light brown, the stripes increasing in frequency down her neck until they reach her belly, which is a darkish golden cream colour striped with darker brown. She is lightly built and moves fluidly, weight low and paws skimming the ground, although she is far from graceful- her mentor taught her to move like this when she was young as it gives a balance advantage in a fight and is more stealthy for hunting. Her voice is high and clear.
Her left ear is broken and twisted, wrecked with bite marks, testament to a fight with a Higher Cat that nearly cost her and her Clan their lives.
Physical Strengths: Wrenstar is quick and agile, an excellent climber and swift runner. She has very good reflexes and perfect balance. She is a stunning fighter, with her reflexes and balance, and has a diverse range of techniques. She relies on her balance in fights, using fluid movements to knock the opponent off balance and take control, rather than swiping around with claws and teeth.
Physical Weaknesses: Wrenstar isn't the strongest of cats, nor is she the stealthiest- her paws seem to seek out the loudest twigs to snap, and she usually forgets to be quiet and yells orders and suchlike. For this reason she is terrible at stalking things- she has to crouch in the undergrowth and then spring out when prey shows its nose, relying on her reflexes and well-camouflaged pelt.
Mental Strengths: Wrenstar is creative and resourceful, and able to think on her feet. She is always ready for a witty response with her sharp tongue and quick mind, and loves riddles. She is focused and poised, and has a strong understanding of tactics and strategy. She is a born leader; it's very easy to trust her, and she is always two steps ahead of other cats. She is loyal to the last, and will follow the warrior code to the death.
She thinks very deeply about everything, and is quite philosophic. She can think quickly, and makes good decisions on her feet, but considers carefully matters of the heart, especially ethics. She can spend hours at a time lost in philosophic thought, and knows quite a few stories, though is easily outmatched by the elders at telling them.
Wrenstar is a born leader. While she can appear haughty and arrogant- and is, occasionally- she is a good friend to those she considers worthy of her, and is an excellent speaker, with a head full of fiery, inspiring speeches and dreams to set followers' minds alight. She has an ability to inspire and persuade that is rarely matched, and despite being somewhat bossy and bad at taking advice, most people are eventually willing to trust her to lead them to safety.
Mental Weaknesses: In essence, Wrenstar is a naive, reckless, arrogant, forgetful, scatterbrained, perfectionist, stubborn, sometimes-ruthless, bossy, rather childish teenager.
She loses her temper easily; while she doesn't get angry with her own warriors, she can be short with people when she is in a bad mood, is impatient with those who can't keep up with her train of thought, and it causes her to act recklessly, especially in fights. She is naive, tending to assume the best of people at first, though once they've betrayed her trust, she is exactly the opposite- she doesn't rebuild burnt bridges, and holds grudges forever. She is reckless, and can be arrogant. She is very stubborn, and bad at taking advice. She has something of a delicate pride- she hates being worse at anything than somebody else.
Personality: Wrenstar isn't, on first glance, the kind of leader who goes down in history. She can come across as a bumbling idiot; forgetful, naive, and arrogant, Wrenstar is not the kind of wolf who immediately shines out as a born leader.
She has a way, though, of speaking; when she truly believes in something, she can give a speech as fiery as anything.
In a fight, Wrenstar comes alive. She turns from the slightly useless snapper of twigs into the poised, confident, brave little cat, completely in control.
In fact, though many don't notice it, Wrenstar is always in control. She uses tone of voice, posture, and all of those other rather useful little things to scream I am the leader, and while you are very wonderful and nice and I respect your opinion, I am still leader, without ever needing to shout at anyone (or rarely, anyway). She is poised and confident, always ready for anything, and while this might get her in trouble occasionally with the other Clans, courage is a useful tool- even if it's coupled with extreme recklessness.
She is a fiery little thing; if she believes in something, she believes in it.
She is definitely a firebrand. She can never just accept the 'way things are', she fights out to change it. She is very against conforming; she hates people who follow stereotypes, and while she can be judgemental on first meeting, she judges people by their actions and speech, not by stereotype. She is fiercely against the idea of 'everybody has to pick this side or that side' or 'follow this leader unquestioningly' or 'all _____ are evil' or 'all _____ are good'. She doesn't pick sides; she makes her own sides! She rarely agrees with anybody or follows anybody else. This got her into quite a bit of trouble when she was younger! Now she's leader, though, she tends to be liberal; she likes her Clan to question her plans and decisions, because it helps her expose and eliminate the weaknesses in them. Besides, she recognises that she isn't perfect.
She can be ruthless when necessary; while she observes the warrior code perfectly, she can seriously hurt or kill cats without a qualm if they have broken the code, provided she is acting completely within the word and spirit of the code, which she is absolutely crazy strict on. She may lead in a liberal style, but she does not stand for breaches of the warrior code.
Honour and the warrior code are Wrenstar's core principles. It serves as both strength and weakness for her, but to Wrenstar herself, it is neither; it is her way of life, her all, her everything. Honour to her makes sense; it's something she understands, a constant even when the world is sometimes strange and cruel to her. She will always abide by her code of honour; she always strives to be fair, never lies (and isn't very good at it even when she tries!), and refuses to kill a defenceless cat- even to the point of nursing her enemy back to health before letting herself fight them! She always keeps her promises. When she takes prisoners (rare) she treats them with respect. Her interpretation of honour isn't all halos and fluffy bunnies though. She is an implacable fighter and when a friend, Clanmate or family member dies, she will go to the ends of the earth to avenge them. She would rather kill herself than surrender, and she will never deviate from this code. She can occasionally be rather strict when it comes to enforcing the warrior code; if somebody is being blatantly dishonourable or breaking the warrior code around her, she will do nasty things to them.
She's very courageous; while she feels fear (a lot), she fights it, and stands up to it. Or she does most of the time. She doesn't like snakes much at all.
She is a feisty little cat; it is completely incomprehensible to her that she'd let anybody lead her out of a den, let alone into battle. She is her own leader as well as her Clan's, and lets nobody tell her what to do.
When she fights, she likes to follow her own plans. She generally doesn't follow anybody else's banner, even if she agrees with their cause or is loyal to them- when she was a warrior, she would protect her leader with her life, but obey her? Um.... how about we go hunting for a bit while we think about it?
This got her into loads of trouble when she was younger, and a lot of elders like telling stories about all the things that happened to her when Wrenstar isn't around. Wrenstar's leader managed to think up some... creative punishments.
Partly because she is a perfectionist; there will always, to her eyes, be flaws in every order she is given or plan she agrees to. Partly because of her arrogance, and the fact she has to be the leader in everything she does or she gets extremely annoyed. Also partly 'cause she's the leader and she's in charge, and she knows it.
Wrenstar is a fighter to her very heart. She cannot understand why anybody would even consider a quiet life; after all, how boring do you get? She believes the best way to live her life, to the full, is as a warrior and leader - and rebel. Fighting for the causes she believes in, defending each breath she draws in and every step she takes. She loves the adrenaline and unpredictability of such a life; and above all, she loves the honour, and the way that when you live a life like that, all your actions matter. You're fighting for life and death here, not stuffing yourself with fresh-kill and lazing around the camp listening to elders' stories.
Having said that, she does enjoy the few tranquil moments she allows herself. But when she does, it's because she is thinking. She doesn't like quietly sorting things or chatting, and hates helping the medicine cats, though she'll do it if it's urgent and all the warriors are busy except her. If she's not having fun, helping her Clan, or fulfilling some important honourable/moral duty doing something, it's completely pointless.
She is determined, and stubborn, and loyal. Once she picks a cause, she sticks to it like glue- whether it's entirely smart or not.
Above all, Wrenstar is a fighter. Grasp that, and you will grasp much of her personality.
Wrenstar can be kind, and compassionate, and friendly. She just isn't very good at it. Rather than comforting people, she inspires them; she prefers to lead and to serve than to befriend; she prefers to have one or two close friends than lots of friends, though she's sociable enough. But this, after all, is why she's leader; the leader is not there to wrap her tail around her poor injured cats and tell them how much of her sympathies they have. A leader is there to lead, to inspire, to fire up. She mostly leaves the organisational side of it to her deputy.
Another unusual aspect of her personality is the way she is totally and completely involved in everything she does. She can remain calm and poised easily enough, but never detached. She is always in the centre of the moment, living every second of her life in that second- never outside of it. It is this total involvement in everything she does that leads to her passion for everything and energy. Almost every emotion she feels is strong and passionate- she never just vaguely dislikes somebody, she hates them; she never decides she might partly like somebody, if she's going to decide they are her friend, she will completely and utterly trust and befriend them. She always commits fully to everything she does, whether love or hatred, a mission to save a beloved friend or a quest to avenge an event against a hated enemy. The emotions she feels are always strong and full, and she puts her full effort and energy into everything she decides to do. She is not one for half measures.
It's this same passion for everything she does and feels that allows her to inspire others around her. She is not just a leader, she is a firebrand; she is rarely lost for words, and can make speeches or scenes to set hearts alight. Her strength of feeling in both love and hatred is infectious, and she is an inspiring young she-cat and leader for DawnClan's cause.
History: Wrenstar was born into DawnClan, daughter of one of the senior warriors, Falconfeather. Her father, Sunsetgaze, died shortly after she was born- she never knew him- though she was told he was a brave, fierce, reckless senior warrior.
She was always in huge trouble as an apprentice because Wrenstar couldn't (and still can't) take orders. She was always the apprentice cleaning out the elders, taking fresh-kill to the medicine cat, and suchlike. She was bored and furious at the monotony of the task; while she learnt quite a few good stories from the elders, hence her being a better storyteller than most, she was always fuming inside that while other apprentices were fighting and hunting, she was stuck inside camp. She never seemed to get any training in with her mentor, Peachblossom.
The Higher Cats came for her when she was eight moons old; they sensed her fury at the monotony of her daily life, her leader's and mentor's refusal to allow her to do anything important, and came to invite her into the ranks of the Higher Cats. They saw the fighting potential in Wrenstar, and wanted her to join their own.
Wrenstar- Wrenpaw, at the time- was sorely tempted. But she remembered what her Clan fought for, the very dream she longed so hard to train for and fight for and live for.
She declined; she didn't think she was really Higher Cat material, she told them. She wanted to tell them what she really thought, but for once her sensibility triumphed over her delicate pride.
The Higher Cat who had come to ask, however, had already seen her thoughts. He had seen what DawnClan wanted. It was a fierce fight; Wrenstar woke up with a broken, twisted ear and bleeding from multiple wounds.
But she won.
The Clan was punished the next day by the Higher Cats. They rampaged through the camp; DawnClan lost their leader, all their elders, their medicine cat, their deputy, all their senior warriors, and some of the junior ones and apprentices. The kits were carried off to be raised with NeverClan.
The medicine apprentice stepped up to the medicine cat position, the warriors and apprentices managed as best they can. New mentors were given to the apprentices who had lost their teachers. More kits were born, after a time. A new leader was chosen by general consensus.
Wrenstar- at the time, still Wrenpaw- fled. She and her best friend, Mistpaw, ran from DawnClan, too scared to return; scared of the wrath of the Higher Cats, and scared of what punishment Wrenstar would receive for what she had brought upon her Clan. Wrenstar fled because she was guilty, and scared; Mistpaw fled because she was terrified of the Higher Cats, broken by the deaths of her family, and would not leave Wrenstar.
Wrenstar lived for almost three moons outside her Clan, wanting to go back so badly that it hurt, but fearing to. It was eventually a badger attack that sent her dragging herself into camp, bleeding from multiple wounds, attempting to carry Mistpaw's broken body.
The medicine apprentice was not skilled enough to save Mistpaw, but she saved Wrenstar. As Mistpaw lay dying, the leader gave her her warrior name; Mistwhisper, in recognition of her bravery in protecting Wrenstar, and giving her life for her friend.
Wrenstar was welcomed back. As the leader of the time explained, DawnClan doesn't punish cats for failing. Wrenstar did what was right in refusing to go with the Higher Cats; and in killing one, she gained DawnClan their first small victory- even if it came at a terrible price.
However, the Higher Cats could never know of her return- they would seek to punish her for what she did, and that would be fatal.
Wrenstar spent the rest of her apprenticeship trying to be accepted among the other cats, and trying to forgive herself for what she did. But eventually she came around; or at least to the point that she could live with herself.
She received her warrior name after a battle with NeverClan; those cats have never respected the borders, after all. She was known as Wrenswoop.
It was a time of relative peace for DawnClan; there were no major events as Wrenstar worked her way up through the ranks to become a senior warrior.
Wrenstar was always a reckless cat, and it was her failing. She was chasing NeverClan prey-thieves back across their border when a Higher Cat appeared. Wrenstar thought the Higher Cat was merely there to defend them and retreated backwards, well inside the DawnClan border.
The Higher Cat looked her in the eye and told her he'd seen her snarl before. The cat before him was older now, but he recognised her.
Wrenstar could not bear failing her Clan again, allowing them to be punished. She let them take her to the Dark Forest, rather than allow her Clan to endure the Higher Cats' punishment again. She stayed for four months, while they punished her. After that she left, went back to her Clan and told them of all that had happened.
But even taking the punishment wasn't enough; DawnClan's deputy disappeared whilst hunting the next day, and was never seen again. The leader chose Wrenstar. She protested; she didn't want the leadership, didn't deserve it after all the trouble she'd brought to her Clan, but all the Clan's members of the time agreed. Wrenstar had suffered for their cause and their Clan; nobody hated the Higher Cats more than she did; she was clever and capable; and she had the kind of absolute, to-the-death loyalty that marks out the truest heroes.
The leader of the time and the leader before Wrenstar, Oceanstar, was one of the very few leaders to die a natural death. Wrenstar inherited the Clan a few months ago; and what happens now, only StarClan knows.
