Leopardleaf walked along the river hoping to find some herbs or even moss for dens. It was dark out and a light fog had rolled in but she was determined to find herbs before she went back to camp. The moon was shining above now seeming brighter then ever since it was the only light in the darkness, her eyes reflected off the light looking a golden-yellow, her tail slowly waving back and forth, and she scanned the river banks for herbs. She kept walking but only found moss so she took a mouth full of moss and started going towards the camp when all of a sudden she saw something shine in the water, she walked into the shallower end of the stream and look towards it, What was it? she thought, could it be some kind of two-leg thing? She took a step closer and picked it up with her other paw. It was a a two-leg thing, a piece of smoothed down, reflecting glass that was reflecting the moonlight, she decided to wrap it in moss and take it back with her. Hopefully no one knew she left because she was gone for a long time and she softly stepped into camp.

It was not an uncommon thing for the young leader to be unable to sleep; her green eyes glinted at the moon in the darkness. She stretched and sighed, knowing she should definitely get some sleep. But she just couldn't. The night possessed a certain clarity that warmer nights never did; the air was cold and clear on her face and - in her imagination, at least - the stars glinted in the velvety sky above. She supposed she enjoyed this, sitting at the entrance of the den when the rest of the Clan was sound asleep, watching. Waiting, sometimes it felt like; though she was never sure what for. It was nice to be the only one up. It was nice to listen, too; listen to the sounds of the warriors' breathing and the soft screeches of hunting birds and the rustling of the wind in the trees. She was about to turn around and return to the warmth of the inside of her den when a sound made her pause. It was the sound of footsteps, cutting through the softer sounds of breathing and rustling and hooting. She whipped around and took two steps out from her den, pausing with her head tilted. I wonder if it's a fox... or just somebody out for a night-time stroll?

She kept walking in the camp under the darkness of night but then, she noticed the glowing green eyes of her leader, she dropped the dry green moss. "Hello Wrenstar" she whispered, she should have known she couldn't just walk back into camp unseen, some one was always awake. "Do you want some fresh moss for your bed, I couldn't sleep so I went out to find herbs and just decided to get moss instead." she felt bad that she had been gone so long and only brought back moss but she didn't really need the moss for her self. She looked up at the dark sky then back to her leader and padded over to her with the moss. "I wish I knew what the stars had looked like." she sighed and tried to image tiny lights of their warrior ancestors up above in the sky watching over them, their faces lightning up the darkness, now all they had was the moon and though it was bright she had this bad feeling like something was missing, something that could never be replaced.

Cat whispers sounded decidedly different to fox whispers... or badger whispers. Wrenstar tried, for a moment, to imagine what a badger whispering would sound like; and then gave up. It was just too.... freaky. Her eyes strained in the darkness; who was there? The voice came again, and Wrenstar recognised it then; Leopardleaf, the medicine cat. "Do you want some fresh moss for your bed, I couldn't sleep so I went out to find herbs and just decided to get moss instead." Wrenstar blinked in surprise; Leopardleaf had gone looking for herbs and found only moss? Then the cool air on her face reminded her it was the depths of leaf-bare. "No thanks," the leader smiled at her medicine cat, although she knew her smile wouldn't be seen in the darkness, lit only by the watery silver light of the moon. There was a movement in the darkness as Leopardleaf looked up, and Wrenstar copied the action with a frown, hoping there was nothing nasty up there; but there was only the deep velvet black of the sky. It had its own kind of beauty, Wrenstar supposed; not bright and pretty like the birds of the wing or flowers in sunshine or leaves in autumn or colourful sunsets over sun-drown-place.... no, this was a stark beauty, an empty beauty; and Wrenstar was quite surprised to find, now she thought about it, that she rather liked it. She wondered what it would have looked like filled with stars like chips of ice... "I wish I knew what the stars had looked like," Leopardleaf said, her voice mirroring Wrenstar's own thoughts. Wrenstar heard her sigh beside her and she too let out a long, slow breath. She had heard the elder's tales, though only once or twice; the few times they'd sneaked away, into the area of Midnight's Den where the Higher Cats had no power, and the elders had told the stories, beginning quiet and soft and unsure, their voices growing in strength and power as they repeated words given to them by the elders of their own time... tales of StarClan. Then again, Wrenstar wouldn't have it any other way. She was glad she lived now. Yes, in the days of heroes like Firestar and Hollyleaf, StarClan had watched over you and protected you and the stars had shone down from on high; but now was a time when dreamers were needed. A chance to actually do something amazing, to fight a war that needed fighting. No; Wrenstar would be nowhere but here, if she could choose again; and maybe in many moons' time she would overthrow the Higher Cats. She shook her head; such thoughts were dangerous inside camp, where the Higher Cats might be listening. "Is there anything else I can help you with before we retire to our nests?" Wrenstar inquired casually. There had to be another reason the medicine cat had been out quite this late.
